Why Does a Child Need Music?
Article 1. Why Does a Child Need Music?
Hello, dear parents.
Perhaps the most important question that every parent should thoroughly break down and answer before enrolling their child in a music school is actually very simple: Why does your child need music?
Before we dive into lessons, schedules, competitions, and exams, it is crucial to understand the role music plays in our lives.
I think it is no exaggeration to say that music is an absolutely essential part of our reality, surrounding us from the very moment we are born. For millions of years, living organisms have communicated through sound. We pick up on the slightest shifts in vocal inflection, instantly understanding whether we are welcome or if it’s time to run for our lives to avoid being eaten.
By the way, during our first meeting with future young students, we always ask them to identify the mood of a melody by ear—simply put, to tell a happy piece of music from a sad one. This helps us gauge the child's current musical development and emotional responsiveness to what they hear.
Music is like air: it is always around us. However, we get to choose the quality of that air ourselves.
That is why, before starting lessons, it is worth answering: What purpose does music serve specifically for your child?
There is absolutely no need to look for profound, philosophical reasons.
For instance:
- "You'll be able to play for Grandma, Mom, Dad, friends, and even the cat. They love music but don't know how to play, but you will learn."
- "One day, you will walk out onto the stage, and the entire audience will be listening just to you."
- "Whenever you get bored, you can always sit down at your instrument and create something beautiful."
Anything that holds meaning for your specific child matters. The clearer the reason for studying music is, the easier it will be to overcome the challenges that inevitably arise during the learning process.
Interest is the Main Engine of Education
However, interest doesn't just appear out of nowhere; it grows through direct contact with music.
- Go to concerts.
- Listen to music at home.
- Discuss what you heard together.
- Dream about how your family's life would change if someone knew how to play a musical instrument.
It is precisely these kinds of conversations that often mark the beginning of a grand musical journey.
