Article 3. Why Doesn’t My Child Want to Practice?

Article 3. Why Doesn’t My Child Want to Practice?

Perhaps there is no more frequent complaint from parents than the phrase:

“My child doesn’t want to practice.”

In reality, there can be many different reasons hidden behind this problem.

Very often, a child simply doesn't understand why they are studying music. For them, practicing turns into a tedious set of exercises that must be performed solely because an adult demands it.

This is precisely why it is so crucial to define a clear, understandable goal right from the start.

A child needs to realize that music allows them to perform on stage, play their favorite pieces, bring joy to loved ones, express their emotions, and unlock new possibilities.

Overwhelmed Schedules and Home Atmosphere

Another incredibly common reason is burnout and over-scheduling.

Today, many children simultaneously attend multiple sports teams, language courses, tutoring sessions, and after-school clubs. As a result, they simply have no time or energy left for quality music practice.

The atmosphere at home is just as important.

If practicing turns into a cycle of constant conflict, strict monitoring, and pressure, music begins to be associated with stress. Therefore, we always recommend adhering to a simple, golden rule: never use harshness or any form of coercion.

  • Learn to overcome difficulties with a smile, a sense of humor, and self-irony.
  • Show a genuine, heartfelt interest in what your child is doing.

Ask them to play their newest piece for you. Ask what they enjoyed most during their lesson. Praise them for their effort, not just the result.

Even just a few minutes of sincere, focused attention from parents can significantly boost a child's motivation.
